Excellent science fiction novel. Given the current intellectual and social climate surrounding advancements in strong Artificial Intelligence, it is refreshing to read a novel that takes a lighthearted tone (rather than apocalyptic) without sacrificing what makes for good science fiction -- presenting a beleivable vision of the near future. Not just a great story about technology, the major strength of Ball is the attention spent building interesting characters and exploring the human aspects inherent in the introduction of a transformative technology. This human element is made so much stronger by Walker's skillful command of descriptive language which developed engaging pictures of the characters and scenes in compelling detail.

Some of my favorite interweaving storylines involve youthful coming of age contrasted with an Ayn Randian titan of industry without the excessive, stark, and repetitive writing style of Rand.

This book is not only well written and funny but most importantly a page turner. I love science fiction and I was truly enamored by the characters and the fact that it seemed so realistic and not far from our future.
If you're worried about Siri or Alexa taking over, this book will cement that fear. Otherwise, it's well-written and rollicking fun. There's some swearing but no sex scenes.
I loved this book! A great first entry for Adam Walker. The large and revolving cast of characters, each with an interesting and believable backstory, is something you don't see in most modern fiction, and it was exciting to experience. I also loved that the story (mini-spoiler alert) has women characters who are more than just side-pieces to the men and who are intimately involved in the running of technology and business...one of the main characters brought to mind a modern-day Grace Hopper, another Marissa Mayer. A highly recommended read, especially for YA fans of believable near-future SF.
This book is wonderfully written. It is imaginative, humorous, timely, it is completely entertaining. And it is completely believable (maybe even providing us a glimpse into our the future). The characters come to life and are relatable for all ages. If this book catches the attention of the right people, it will be made into a movie, either live action or animated. And OMG the plot twists.
Adam Walker's debut novel is a story of emotional and societal manipulation in the not-so-far-off world of artificial intelligence. A page-turner for me, the book engages your curiosity from the very beginning. What is unique about the story is the seeming familiarity of the futuristic setting and the author's ability to make us see that even our current "smart" devices, once evolved, can so easily degrade relationships and morality. Many would argue that the destruction has already occurred. To craft characters, story line, and the steely chill of the future in such a relatable way is a great talent.
Today, people are obsessed with their cell phones. In the future of, 2039, Spherical pc/ cell, companions called MOIs are the in gadget. This not too distant future is told plausibly and extremely well written. The lives of the characters and their MOIs are well rendered. I totally bought into the story. I love a good syfy, and Ball is a terrific syfy. I highly recommend this unique, terrific , and entertaining novel.
To say that a novel is a "breath of fresh air" is cliche. To say that a novel "takes you on a wild adventure, with many twists and turns" is also cliche, as is "it is a roller coaster of emotions." It is strange, then, how aptly these cliches describe a book that is anything but one. "Ball" is introspective but not self-serious. It is hilarious but much more than a beach read. It's a science fiction book that won't make you feel ashamed to be reading a science fiction book. It's a laugh a minute page turner that holds a mirror up to its readers and OH NO I CAN'T STOP SOMEONE PLEASE SEND HELP.
